About Us

Languages, Linguistics and TESOL – part of the Department of Languages, Information & Communications at Manchester Metropolitan University – provides undergraduate, postgraduate, short and professional courses in modern foreign languages and cultures, linguistics and teaching english to speakers of other languages (TESOL).

The department is located in the lively, cosmopolitan city of Manchester and is home to a diverse community of international staff and students. Its strong local and global links further enhance the quality of learning and opportunities available to our students.

The department’s teaching staff are experts in their fields with national and sometimes international reputations, the facilities are amongst the best in the country and National Student Surveys reveal that students enjoy excellent teaching by lecturers who make their subjects interesting and accessible.

The department’s Language Centre provides a wide range of short and professional development courses to students, teachers and businesses and is accredited by the British Council, while Manchester Metropolitan University is lead organisation in the North West consortium of Routes into Languages, a nationwide programme that encourages the study of foreign languages.

The department’s staff are co-founders and co-directors of the Film in Language Teaching Association (FILTA), an association of over 1,300 language teachers and researchers from more than 30 countries that promotes the teaching and learning of foreign languages through film.
