Head of Faculty Graduate School in exciting collaboration with American company, Pure Green Agriculture

Dr Mike Dempsey’s research on expanded bed biofilm reactor technology (EBBR) is being commercialised by Advanced Bioprocess Development Ltd. (ABD), a Manchester Met spin-out company that he runs.

After an exhaustive global search of available technologies to convert the ammonia to nitrate, Pure Green chose ABD’s EBBR technology, and has been granted an exclusive, global licence for this application. Phil van Wakeren (Pure Green’s CEO) commented that, “I was impressed by what I learned from reading Mike’s patents and other publications. We see the EBBR as being essential for a reliable and efficient nitrification process.” ABD (and MMU Enterprises, as a shareholder) will earn income from each EBBR plant installed and from each tonne of nitrate solution produced. Pure Green’s initial market has the potential for recovery of 142,000 tonnes of ammonia per year.

Mike commented that, “if the process proves successful, then it has the potential to make a substantial contribution to the Faculty, in terms of income generation via MMU Enterprises, and impact, e.g. jobs created at ABD and Pure Green, as well as being an important development for the circular economy”.
