"Thanks to the support and encouragement from my lecturers, I am in an application process for a PhD study at Manchester Metropolitan University"
Why did you choose to study your postgraduate course at Manchester Metropolitan University?

I moved to Manchester from Wales after graduating from Media and Communication in 2013, and after two years of being a professional bartender and research assistant, I have decided to come back to education. After attending Postgraduate Course Fair, I chose to study at Manchester Metropolitan University because of the design of the course - MA Applied Linguistics covers a wide range of subjects within linguistics and language studies, and the lecturers are involved in many research projects, which they are happy to talk about and share with the students.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

As postgrads, we are expected to think critically and encouraged to express our views and opinions, not just repeating what has already been said. I enjoy the challenge of learning new things and undertaking my own research, whether it involves using new software, conducting interviews, or reading academic publications and books.

What has been the best thing about your postgraduate experience at the university, and why?

After receiving very positive feedback for one of my assignment, I have been encouraged to continue with my research and try to publish it. Thanks to the support and encouragement from my lecturers, I am in an application process for a PhD study at Manchester Metropolitan University. I’m also a Course Representative for MA Applied Linguistics, so my role is to help other students make the most of their university experience – it can be stressful as our course is very demanding and intense, but the knowledge and skills we gain during this year are invaluable.

What would you say to anyone thinking of studying for a postgraduate qualification at Manchester Metropolitan University?

Do it! It is challenging, demanding and requires you to work hard, but you constantly learn new things, are surrounded by driven and inspiring people and get access to numerous resources that will make studying interesting and rewarding.
