"I have gained key data and analytical skills, alongside a great foundation in coding packages which are really useful in my current role."
Why did you pick your chosen degree?

Data and empirical evidence are used in everything we do. From your phone contract to reading the news which has that ‘big stat’ on the front page. I decided to do this MSc not only because I enjoyed the BSc; which included quantitative methods, but also knowing that data is becoming a driving force in the workplace and whichever field I decide work in, there will be an element of data which I will have to work with.

What skills do you feel you have gained/developed at Manchester Metropolitan University that helped you prepare for life after University?

I have gained key data and analytical skills which have helped me to approach data in a different way. It has taught me not to take data and results at face-value but to investigate it further. Additionally, it has helped me gain greater narrative and interpretive skills which are key when communicating your data to a wider audience. Alongside this, using SPSS software to analyse data has given me a great foundation to learn additional coding packages which are now really useful in my current role.

Which topic(s) of study did you enjoy the most, and why?

The topic of study I enjoyed the most was Statistics in Practice, as this gave me great insight in to how real-world data and figures were used to report the impact you have achieved and how to disseminate this effectively based on your audience.

Were you involved in research projects with our staff or did you undertake a placement while on your course?

Yes. Whilst studying my Masters, I, alongside two peers, was given the opportunity to work with staff on a research project for Citizens Advice. I think this was imperative to our learning, as we got to see how data was collected and utilised in a voluntary sector organisation. I definitely think it is important to either take part in a research project or undertake a placement, as it can enhance your chances at employability against others who also study this course, as well as giving you an insight into the workplace environment.

Since graduating have you taken any additional qualifications, training or continuing professional development to develop your career?

Since graduating I have taken additional training to continue to develop my learning and progress my career further. I have taken data visualisation workshops to learn how to use packages such as Power BI and Tableau to effectively visualise findings. I have also undertaken courses on R Coding and Corpus Linguistics which help me with more complex data analysis.

Why should a student choose Manchester Metropolitan University?

I think the Q-step team here at Manchester Met are invaluable. They are very supportive and provide a warm environment, enabling you to feel comfortable to ask questions. They are always looking for ways to help you expand your CV and gain the necessary experience to get you ready for the competing job market.

What is your top tip for students about finding a graduate job, or on how to progress their career?

Do not limit yourself. Although you may have developed your analytical skills in a certain area, your skills are transferable and adaptable. A data analyst comes in many forms, not just analysing social issues. Also be willing to keep learning. The completion of your degree is not the end-point of your knowledge. Be open to going on additional courses to expand your learning and add to your bank of skills.
