What is your current role and what are your main responsibilities?

Labour member for Moss Side, Manchester City Council. I represent the views and needs of the people of Moss Side, take on casework, and support residents who feel passionately about Moss Side as a wonderful place to live, work, and raise our families.

What did you enjoy most about your degree and why?

I feel very privileged to have been able to study my degree as I did. There was such a diversity in the modules I could take, that I was able to create a programme that challenged and inspired me. I could say so much, but something I hadn’t studied before my degree was how the majority of people experience politics through art and culture. I think there is a perception that politics is far removed from the majority of people, but studying the politics through art demonstrated how universal political messages are. While I got a huge amount out of studying traditional and more refined cultural representations of politics, it also meant a lot to see popular culture both validated academically and taken very seriously. The quality of teaching I got was really high, my tutors all loved their subjects, and that fostered an environment where students could fully challenge and explore ideas.

What key skill did your degree help you gain?

Critical thinking.
