Michael Watson

"My time spent at Manchester Metropolitan University would not have been even half as enjoyable if it had not been for the friendly, inviting, and creative staff here."
What do you like most about your course?

I am someone who deeply enjoys applying theory to modern and historical occurrences; something that is done regularly on my course. I enjoy learning about new ways of theoretical approach in order to tackle an issue or reach a better understanding of a social phenomenon. For this reason – the course appeals to me on an academic level, as it allows me to fully explore and utilise different sociological and criminological theory.
Furthermore, the course material lends itself to be married to various other psychological and philosophical lenses and modes of understanding, which translates to the fact that whilst I may only be studying Sociology and Criminology – my understanding and mastery of certain psychological and philosophical theories and positions has increased over the duration of my course. This appeals to me, as I enjoy weaving a perspective made of many threads, and my course has allowed me to do that seamlessly.

What skills do you feel you have gained during your studies at Man Met?

My essay writing skills have certainly developed, and I am proud and confident enough to count essay writing as one of my skills. My ability to communicate and work with my fellow students has developed too. Perhaps the greatest development and skill is of self-reflection and retrospection: during my time at university I have gone through huge personal development and evolution, none of which would have been possible without learning those skills.

Have you completed a placement?

I have recently concluded my placement at The Men’s Room, an excellent organisation that strives to help young men in crisis in the Manchester area, and do a great job of doing so.

What is your top tip for other students looking to study this course at Manchester Metropolitan University?

Be a maverick. Read psychology articles and philosophy papers as well as your own subject material – anything you are interested in you can find literature on and weave it into your own, unique writing. Don’t be the 30th person in your class of 31 to choose the same topic for your essay question. Be different, and be creative with your course.
