MA History
"I enjoyed being able to tailor my course to my own research areas."
The thing I enjoyed most about my course was how I could tailor it to my own research areas. While there was still set assignments to complete, many of them were free choice or very open so I could choose what I wanted to write about. This meant that I could conduct a lot of independent research, which really helped when it came to writing my dissertation. I also feel I am now much better prepared to go onto a PhD programme too.
I have gained research skills and learned how to write academically. I have developed my proof reading skills, my grammar, my time management and organisational skills. I have also improved my presentation skills and more importantly my confidence. Specifically on the MA I have developed skills writing many abstracts and proposals as well as numerous application forms.
I have been a peer mentor twice and a course rep during the MA. Also as a postgraduate student I ran a seminar series and attended many of the symposiums, workshops and seminars offered within the University. These all proved to be very helpful and gave me an insight into the life of an academic and a deeper understanding of how the University works.
Get involved with as much as possible! Go to workshops, volunteer, join societies, it really will add to your experience.
My supervisor – Kathryn Hurlock. She has a family and a tight teaching schedule but always makes time for her students and goes above and beyond to support them.
